Description

By horseback, by wagon, by stage, and, starting in mid-1880, by the new railway with a depot at Benson, women–with husbands and without–come to the silver-sprung camp of Tombstone. For financial recompense, women operate restaurants, provide lodging (from small miners’ rooming houses to the Grant Hotel), open stores, teach school, and entertain lonely men. While all of Tombstone’s residents in this period arrest our attention, no woman accomplishes more in her Tombstone years than “mining expert” Nellie Cashman.
